Building Our Greenhouse

Having a greenhouse these days is gaining in importance and with a bit of creativity, one can be built with relatively little cost and space.  They are perfect for starting hardy sprouts from seeds and we see an extremely high germination rate.  The plants that are grown in the greenhouse are not getting the chemicals sprayed on them from the air and are safe from critters eating them at first sprout.  Everything seems to grow so much faster in the greenhouse and the plants even glow with a beautiful look of abundant nutrition.

We also have an Aquaponics system set up in our greenhouse where we are raising Tilapia fish (more on this topic HERE).  I just love to walk around my little greenhouse barefoot, the floor is literally growing under my feet, sprouting an edible salad mix of miner’s lettuce and sour grass, it’s tasty and beautiful! The soil is cool and grounding and the air is fresh and clean!

In order to build our greenhouse, spending as little money as possible, we wanted to see what we had lying around.  We found poles from an old covered parking structure and knew we had found our frame! We bought a roll of Polyethylene plastic to be our cover ($99) and measured up our plastic cuts. Then we used hand fishing reels which we attached to one side of the main sheet with fishing hooks and then tossed the fishing reel over the frame, and then pulled the plastic over the frame (that sounds a LOT EASIER than it actually was!).  We glued the plastic to the frame and then assembled the doors (that we got free from craigslist) onto sliding tracks. We found wood (again from the free section on craigslist) and built a few rows of shelves inside to hold our planters. Viola 🙂 a ready working greenhouse, total expenditure, $150!
