Why Clean Water Matters (And What I Actually Use In My Own Home)

If you've been following Earthie Mama for a while, you know I think about ingredients a lot. What goes on our skin, what we breathe, what we spray in our homes. But there's one thing I didn't think hard enough about for years — what actually comes out of my tap.

The Thing About Tap Water

Most of us assume tap water is simple: clean in, clean out. But municipal water travels through aging pipes, gets treated with chemicals to make it "safe," and can still carry along things we'd rather not drink — chlorine byproducts, heavy metals, pharmaceutical residue, fluoride, and in some areas, things like lead from old plumbing.

None of this is meant to scare you. It's meant to do what I always try to do here — give you the plain facts so you can make your own informed choice.

Why This Matters As Much As Anything Else We Talk About

I've spent years formulating products with zero synthetic chemicals, zero harsh preservatives, zero shortcuts. It never made sense to me to be that careful about what touches my family's skin, and then fill a glass from the tap without a second thought.

Water is the most basic thing we consume, multiple times a day, every single day, for our entire lives. If we're going to be intentional about anything, it should probably be this.

What I Use in My Own Home

After a lot of research, I landed on a Berkey gravity-fed water filter. A few reasons it made sense for me:

  • No electricity or plumbing required — it sits on my counter and works with gravity alone, which also makes it a smart option if you're ever without power.

  • Removes a wide range of contaminants — without stripping out the beneficial minerals your body actually needs.

  • Built to last — this isn't a filter you're replacing every few weeks. The system and filters are designed for the long haul.

  • Simple enough for daily life — fill the top chamber, let gravity do the work, pour clean water from the bottom. No moving parts to fuss over.

It's become one of those quiet background pieces of my home — not flashy, just dependable. The kind of thing that fits the Earthie Mama philosophy: simple, intentional, built to actually work.

A Few Questions to Ask Yourself

You don't need to overhaul everything overnight. But it might be worth asking:

  • Do I know what's actually in my local water supply? (Most municipalities publish an annual water quality report — it's worth a quick search.)

  • Am I filtering drinking water, or just hoping it's fine?

  • If I have little ones at home, am I confident in what they're drinking every day?

The Bottom Line

Clean water isn't a trend — it's foundational. It's one of the simplest, most consistent things you can do for your family's health, and once you set up a good system, it mostly takes care of itself.

If you've been thinking about making the switch, I'd genuinely recommend looking into a Berkey. It's the one I use, and it's earned its place as a permanent fixture in my kitchen.

From the Earth, to my hands, to yours,

Alex
