I have decided to take control of our health and take measures in order to help the flu from taking over my family. To be clear with myself on ways that my family and I can help stay well and prevent the flu from invading, I created a list of the
7 ways that I can prevent the flu from taking over my house!
1. Wash your hands!
Seriously, this is the most important thing you can do. The germs that settle on your hands should be wiped away as soon as possible before the germs end up in the mouth or nose and grow into a flu. My girls and I make hand sanitizer that we put in a spray bottle. They leave it in their desks and school to keep germ free (as much as possible). CLICK HERE for my Homemade Hand Sanitizer Recipes
2. Stay hydrated
Bring a water bottle with you wherever you go. I send a large bottle with my girls every morning that they drink all day at school. Water helps every part of your body work efficiently. The immune system can work at its best when full hydrated and has the strength to ward off illness.
3. Organic, plant based diet
Increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables in the diet is helpful to bring in all of the vitamins and nutrients for a strong immune system. Those that have Vitamin C are most important. These include, papaya, orange, lemon, strawberries, broccoli, leafy greens, peppers etc. Other important natural foods include apple cider vinegar, garlic, onions, ginger, turmeric (all in my Master Tonic), coconut oil, seeds and nuts.
Having supplements on hand is a good idea during flu season. A Vitamin C supplement is good to have. Camu Camu is very high in vitamin C. It is a plant derived antioxidant and comes in powder. My Master Tonic is the best flu prevention for me. I drink a shot glass full per day and it seems to keep me from getting any flu symptoms. For my children I created the Immune Tonic that is Elderberry based with other powerful ingredients that work together to keep the flu away or if you have the flu it keeps the symptoms from growing. If you cannot get enough sunlight than a Vitamin D supplement would be necessary. A probiotic is a good supplement to have around. They put 'good bacteria' in your gut which helps everything run a bit smoother. You can get it in a pill form or get it from Kombucha, Kefir, Sauerkraut, Kimchi, Miso, etc.
Exercise helps keep the body strong. It also helps release toxins, reduces stress and improve circulation. Even if it is just a walk or a yoga practice. This is vital for a healthy body to ward of the flu.
Please love sleep. Sleep is good! Allowing your body to rest and re cooperate from a day's activities is vital to maintain balance and a healthy body, mind and spirit. It is especially important to children. So, make sure your children go to bed early.
7. Go Outdoors
Get outside, breathe fresh air, go into nature and relax. Connecting to the Earth has a naturally grounding and healing effect on the body. Try and get a bit of sunlight every day if you can! Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to serious health conditions.
Please comment if you have any other ideas to add to the list!
